Thermal paper is a special thin paper coated with a chemical that changes color when heated. It is used in thermal printers, ATMs, boarding passes, baggage stickers, cash registers and credit card terminals. What makes thermal paper unique is that it is coated with a chemical. When heated, layers of chemicals on the paper react, creating a dark image. These chemicals are also responsible for its smooth surface.
